Letters of Love and Hope for Grand Blanc, Michigan

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As a Stake Presidency, we want to begin by expressing our deep love and appreciation for each of you. Our Stake is filled with devoted Saints who consistently exemplify faith, discipleship, and quiet acts of goodness in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ. It is a sacred privilege to serve among you and to witness how you strive to be “a light on a hill,” reflecting the Savior’s love to all who seek Him.

In recent weeks, our hearts have been tender as we have mourned the passing of our beloved Prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, and grieved over the tragic events that occurred in Grand Blanc, Michigan. These moments invite reflection and remind us of President Nelson’s recent message, “Peacemakers Needed,” in which he taught:

“His true disciples build, lift, encourage, persuade, and inspire—no matter how difficult the situation. True disciples of Jesus Christ are peacemakers.”

In times like these—when sorrow, confusion, or even fear may abound—we remember that contention and division are contrary to the plan of our Heavenly Father. In the spirit of peace and healing, we invite each of you to join us in writing letters or cards of encouragement to those most directly affected by the events in Grand Blanc.

Please share with them your pure testimony of the Savior, a favorite scripture, a thoughtful work of art, or words of comfort that may help them feel the peace that only the gospel of Jesus Christ can bring. This is a sacred opportunity to “mourn with those that mourn” and to “comfort those that stand in need of comfort.”

Bishoprics and Branch Presidencies will collect these cards for distribution to the families and individuals affected. We ask that all cards be ready by October 19, so they may be sent together shortly thereafter. Remember, your words need not be eloquent or lengthy—simple, sincere expressions of faith and love will touch hearts and bring hope.

Thank you for your continual examples of faith, charity, and discipleship in Jesus Christ. You inspire us every day. Please know that we love you deeply and pray for you always.

With love and gratitude,

William G. Thornton Jr.
